Cupid’s Arrow Bookmark

 Materials:

crochet cotton size 5 or 10

 knitting needles in a size that makes your stockinette stitch look solid, not lacy. US0 or US1 would probably work best with size 10, and US2 or US3 with size 5 cotton.

 Yarn needle for hiding ends.

 Sample is done in Pisgah Yarn and Dyeing Company's  Article 960 America's Best Mercerized Perle Cotton Size 5, # color 95 Red with size US2 needles.

 

 Stitches and abbreviations used:

 K- knit

P- purl 

K2tog- knit 2 together

 Sl- Slip stitch knit wise

 SSK- slip, slip, knit- slip one stitch knit-wise, slip the next stitch knit-wise, insert the left needles into the fronts of the 2 stitches and knit together throught the back loop 

PSSO- pass slipped stich over.

 YO- yarn over


Directions:

 Cast on 15 stitches 

Rows 1-5) K all 

All following even numbered rows) K2, P11, K2 

Row 7) K6, K2tog, YO, K7 

Row 9) K5, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, K5 

Row 11) K4, K2tog, YO, K3, YO, SSK, K4 

Row 13) K3, K2tog, YO, K5, YO, SSK, K3 

Row 15) K2, K2tog, YO, K7, YO, SSK, K2 

Row 17) K3, YO, SSK, K1, K2tog, YO, K2, K2tog, YO, K3 

Row 19) K4, YO, Sl1, K2tog, PSSO. YO, K1, YO, Sl1, K2tog, PSSO, YO, K4 

Row 21) K4, K2tog, YO, K1, Sl1, K1, YO, SSK, K4 

Row 23) K7, Sl1, K7

 At this point you will repeat rows 23 and 24 until bookmark is about 1" shorter than you want your final piece to be.  The slipped stitch on the knit rows creates a raised column of stitches that make up the shaft of the arrow.  It can be as long or a short as you like.

 

When you have reached your desired length (minus about an inch) continue as follows: 

Row 25) K5, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, K5 

Row 27) K4, K2tog, YO, K1, Sl1, K1, YO, SSK, K4 

Row 29) K3, K2tog, YO, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, YO, SSK, K3 

Row 31) K2, K2tog, YO, K2tog, YO, K3, YO, SSK, YO, SSK, K2 

Row 33) K3, K2tog, YO, K5, YO, SSK, K3 

Rows 35-39, INCLUDING EVEN ROWS) K all

 Bind off, hide ends. 

Wet or steam block bookmark.  A little laundry starch can be used to help it keep it’s shape.
